Green Hydrogen

Fuel for a sustainable future

The UK government has ambitious plans for hydrogen as part of its strategy to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. The government aims to develop a thriving low-carbon hydrogen sector with a target of 10 gigawatts (GW) of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030.

Hydrogen is considered a sustainable fuel because it produces almost no pollution when burned. When hydrogen reacts with oxygen, it generates only water and heat, making it a clean energy source.

Green hydrogen is a form of hydrogen fuel produced using renewable energy sources like wind, solar, or hydroelectric power.

The two most common ways to create green hydrogen at present are:

Electrolysis:

Water is split into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity generated from renewable sources. This process is considered environmentally friendly because it produces zero greenhouse gas emissions. However, the production of green hydrogen can be energy-intensive and costly, as it requires significant amounts of renewable energy and means that renewable energy is not available for other uses. Moreover most renewables in the UK derive from wind and solar which are not always available.

Biomass gasification:

This involves converting organic materials like agricultural waste into hydrogen gas. This method can reduce waste and produce hydrogen simultaneously, but it also has limitations. It can release some carbon emissions and requires sustainable feedstock management to ensure a steady supply of biomass.

HYRDALYSIS is positioned to sit alongside other forms of green hydrogen production to diversify and de risk to options available for example when the sun doesn't shine and the wind doesn't blow.
